Kalbinur’s Story

Kalbinur Sidik is an educator, a mother, and a Uyghur woman. For nearly three decades she taught Mandarin in Ürümqi. Her memoir is, first, the story of that life.

Context
Understanding the context
The memoir concerns the Uyghur people, a Turkic, predominantly Muslim community, and events in the region officially called the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. Many Uyghurs refer to their homeland as East Turkestan. Both names appear in discussions of the region, and each carries its own history and meaning.
What follows in the book is Kalbinur Sidik’s personal testimony — her own account of what she lived and witnessed.
